PAC System Maintenance
A precision air conditioning (PAC) unit is a device that monitors and maintains the temperature, air distribution and humidity in a computer room or data center. As more equipment is squeezed into IT spaces, it is more important than ever to ensure that each component of the support infrastructure is operating at maximum efficiency and reliability. The failure of a PAC unit can lead to downtime, which of course means a loss of service and that can translate into a loss of money and often times a loss of customers.
The performance of servers and operating systems is dependent on cooling support, as these systems change, the cooling needs to change as well. Trusting a service provider who looks at the overall critical infrastructure of your computer room is needed. Data center cooling systems that meet the needs of IT heat loads have very difference service and maintenance needs than systems designed for occupant comfort.
To maximize the efficiency and maintain the consistency of your precision air conditioning, it is important to develop and stick to a long term service plan that includes preventive maintenance and optimization of the precision cooling system. The substantial investment made in cooling equipment, as well as in the computing hardware it sustains, should make preventive maintenance a priority.
IDCS offers a precision air conditioning maintenance service as part of a comprehensive service plan specifically designed to provide preventative maintenance for PAC systems. When our service engineers visit a site, they have set routines and paperwork (digital) to complete in order to ensure your air conditioner is serviced and maintained to manufacturer recommendations. Additional routines may be included in your service contract based on what we know is required for the type of installation and your site characteristics.
Our engineering approach is comprehensive and ensures a full assessment of the air conditioning unit(s) on site, including both indoor and outdoor units, pipework and electrical circuits. Drain lines are flushed to prevent the possibility of future blockages and leaks. The units are thoroughly cleaned, and checks made to ensure the system is working within specification.
Preventative maintenance can be scheduled monthly, quarterly, bi-annually or annually. For critical servers and equipment, we recommend monthly or bi-monthly visits.
IDCS’s preventative maintenance service includes:
√ Cleaning the air conditioning system.
√ Check evaporator coils periodically to ensure that they are clean and free of debris.
√ Adjusting the system for peak efficiency.
√ Replacing worn or damaged parts, such as filters or belts.
√ Check compressor for leaks and the oil level should also be inspected.
√ Check refrigerant levels at least annually in direct-expansion (DX) units.
√ Electrical testing, a motor’s rpm should also be recorded, along with the amperage readings.
Benefits of precision air conditioning preventative maintenance include:
√ Increased reliability
√ Reducing change of unexpected break-down
√ Maintaining safe and healthy operation
√ Improved performance
√ Avoiding unexpected downtime
√ Increased efficiency, leading to lower energy costs
√ Prolonging the lifespan of the system
Properly maintaining your air conditioning systems will help save money on power bills, by ensuring it performs at peak efficiency. A properly maintained PAC or HVAC system will also last longer, delaying cost of replacement.
